The tower at my base only controls the ground movement and airspace immediately surrounding the base (up to 2,500 ft above the surface and 5.5miles surrounding the base to be more specific). We control the airspace up to around 30 miles out surrounding our base (again, varies from base to base). It is basically a dark room with a bunch of radar scopes and we control/separate aircraft using radar. Some bases have what is called a RAPCON (Radar Approach Control). First of all the tower is not the only ATC facility. I cannot recall that happening a single time while I was a military controller.Ĭurrent AF controller here. It's still pretty common to be shocked at the manner in which someone operates an aircraft. You can't ever get an absolute grasp on anticipated pilot action. The limitation is NOT the aircraft, it's who is operating it. The result is.well, you never know what you're going to get. Outside of the military, anyone with enough money can literally whip open a barn door, push their plane out, and away they go.Įven at the airline level, over time you will learn (for the most part) despite them all flying a B737, airline A, B, and C will operate differently. The limitation was what the AIRCRAFT could and could not do. The result of that type of standardized training was absolute standardized and anticipated pilot action. In the military, the pilots are all trained at the same place, with the same curriculum, and that training program is quite extensive (in both structure and time spent in it). The biggest difference, for me, was the actual operation of the aircraft.
